Sammy Lee has been abruptly removed from his role of assistant manager as Liverpool's revolution under Kenny Dalglish continues.

His sudden departure ends a long association with the club for the 52-year-old, who started his Anfield career as a schoolboy during the days of Bill Shankly and returned as Rafa Benitez's No 2 in May 2008.

The main contenders to replace him are Paul Clement, who left a similar position at Chelsea this week, and the club's former midfielder Gary McAllister.

Lee had also been assistant to Roy Hodgson before Dalglish returned as manager in January but the subsequent appointment of Steve Clarke as first-team coach altered his role, culminating in yesterday's departure.

It was suggested that Lee would be in line to link up again with Sam Allardyce - to whom he was assistant at Bolton between 2005 and 2007 - at West Ham, but that is not the case.

Lee does not have another job to go to.

Neither Lee nor Liverpool, who have surprisingly missed out to Sunderland for Connor Wickham's signature, would comment but talks are ongoing to reach a settlement on the contract he signed in March 2009.

Also continuing is Liverpool's quest to recruit new faces. It was a huge shock that Liverpool failed to lure Wickham from Ipswich and, so far, Jordan Henderson remains the only addition to a squad that finished sixth in the Barclays Premier League last season.

But John W Henry, the principal figure of the club's owners Fenway Sports Group, used his Twitter account to stress that Liverpool will not abandon a specific plan that has been mapped out by Dalglish and director of football Damien Comolli.

Liverpool are primarily pursuing young British players with excellent fitness and disciplinary records, such as Aston Villa's Stewart Downing and Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam - and Henry insisted that policy will continue.

'Speculation on players shouldn't include those of a certain age,' he wrote. 'We are not going to be successful by merely filling short-term needs.'

'Everything in sports is overpriced now - especially the cost of winning. But you make your choices based on a plan.

'Some things happen early and some late. The important thing is that things happen. Sometimes what you avoid is important.'
