I think Rafa has also pointed out, and I agree with that opinion, that we don't necessarily need wingers in the true sense. We need good footballers who can play on the right or left and I'd prefer that over getting Lennon type of players. In a midfield of Houghton (very underrated), Molby, McMahon, and Whelan, none were wingers but a great midfield nonetheless. If only we could resurrect that lot. Pacy widemen tend to get injured a lot and I think good footballers (brain, skills) who can cross from the left or right, would be preferable. If Gerrard, as an example, were playing on the right of midfield, I'd prefer him to any other pacy winger out there because he can cross well and is an intelligent footballer.>

You miss the important ingredients when saying there was no wingers in - Whelan, Molby, McMahon, and Houghton -who were the fullbacks??? They were players who could get forward and provide width and support. Most notably and consistently Phil Neal on the right. LB Barney Rubble did a mighty fine job of attacking, but following his departure the LB slot was a bit of a revolving door - Beglin, Staunton, Burrows etc.
