so he saw the event (even though he wasn't looking at it) and gave a free
kick so that's all there is to it. in fact, subsequent to that, he's seen
it on video and confirmed that no further action is needed.

The idiocy of this claim they are making is that it overlooks the obvious point that the assistant ref was inches away from the incident and had to have seen it perfectly, if he had been any closer to it then rooney might have got him in the face too.
