A furniture designer produces designs or works from existing designs, from a client or design colleague, to produce unique pieces or mass-produced items. Furniture designers need to be able to use computer aided design (CAD) to develop models and prototypes, and also need to understand materials in order to consider cost, durability, safety, and so on. These are the skills you learn through a furniture design degree or diploma. Traditional skills still have their place in furniture design, but computer technology now plays a key role in any designer's work. Career training programs work best when combined with hands-on experience. A furniture design program gives you a more comprehensive understanding of design principles and use of CAD technology.
