As a summary response to all posts on this issue I'd like to say:
a) to Keith. The questions about why now, why not on Jan. 1 etc are
moot. This has nothing to do about anybody else or anything except
Torres himself. Clubs always enquire about players, and soemtimes they
make an offer. In this case, Chelsea made the offer first but in a few
days Torres handed in a written transfer request. He doesn't want to
play for Kenny or Liverpool.
b) I agree with the bad timing. As already said, no player is bigger
than the club and for the right price any player can leave any club
but in this case what is more annoying is that it looks like Torres is
deliberately leaving this late to hurt us, and do maximum damage to
the club. I'd say b*****s to the idea that he is doing us and himself
a favour i.e. a move would be in the best interets of both parties.
Come summer, yes. It's written in his contract so failure to qualify
for the CL would allow him to ask for a move and he would be granted
that wish but we wouldn't bother that much bec. we would have time to
use that money. What use would 50 m. in the coffers be right now when
you can't spend a penny of it.
c) Whether Chelsum have an ageing squad, whether they will or won't
qualify for CL, the risks of Owen MKII etc etc. are pointless. I
really couldn't care less about them. Do you people seriously think
Torres hasn't given this enough thought? He has mulled over it and
made a decision we are angry with. And even if he comes back on
Tuesday I'm sure his relationship with the fans will not be the same.
So...
Pessimisitic verdict: Sell him for 50m or 40m plus Anelka.
Optimistic verdict: Tell him he's going nowhere and has a contract to
honour. He can leave şin the summer for 50 m because that's what the
clause says. In the meantime he has to stop sulking and get on with
playing for that red shirt. I agree with Janet that it's about bloody
time clubs reminded players about loyalty. He owes us at least half a
season.

> I think he's a complete *#*# to try and do this, especially with the timing of it that would hamper our chances of getting a replacement in time and reducing the competition for CL places to his potential new club.

"Rush went and Barnes, Beardsley and Aldridge came in". Sure they did, because we were top dogs and they wanted to come here.....but now? But football has changed and sadly, not for the better.
