You could use your argument to say that the ownership situation last season
should have had no effect on matters on the pitch as the first team weren't
involved in any of the boardroom antics. But some things pervade deeper on
an organisational level. If players make mistakes in pre-season (just as
repeatedly making mistakes in training) then that can have a negative effect
upon their state of mind when it matters. It may not be a massive effect -
but it is still some effect.
Just like a player who misses half a dozen penalties in practice - that's
going to be at the back of his mind somewhere when he steps up to take that
vital penalty in a World Cup penalty shootout.

Do you care to take up the finding out our preseason results from the 70s
and 80s challenge then?
Can you honestly say that more positive results from any of the previous
games would have any influence on a winning mentality for our first team
when this side is the closest to a first team and still probably won't be
the one against sunderland.

I think the truth encompasses a bit of both worlds. Yes, it is only a
meaningless pre-season game where the result doesn't matter. But it does
have psychological consequences just like everything else. Zimmer is right
that it is important to get into a winning mentality early as often that can
carry you through the close difficult games.

Apparently this Norweigian team have borrowed 5 from a lower division.
Training session or not we should be beating these and heading into the
season with a winning mentality. The game in Turkey, I wrote off as soon as
I saw the line up, but we've done this before in preseason and then started
the season awfully.
