I think part of the problem in evaluating Carroll is the price tag. Had we
paid £15-20M I don't think there would be as many questions.
Now, before anyone starts, I'm not saying that he was a bad signing. I do
think we overpaid - but that was inevitable when trying to buy a quality
replacement for Torres in January.
It's difficult to evaluate him at this time due to his relative lack of
games and injury. The main concern I've seen people say is that he tends to
get knocked out of the way too often for a big man - ala Heskey.
But he had a good goalscoring record at Newcastle - who on paper are a much
worse side than we are. I think the key will be finding a way of slotting
him in to our system and style of play without that suffering.

Do you think Carroll is going to offer a lot to the team when fit or
depending on who {if} we bring in another, would end up on the bench more
often than the 35mil would warrant?

I think it has reached the point where he needs to be making the matchday
squad or moved on permanently.

One day Lucas might manage to win over his doubters completely, until then
we get overly optimistic partnerships that wouldn't work all the time unless
the opposition was weak and/or our central defence was a lot quicker.

I don't think Carroll has convinced yet, but realistically Kuyt as a
striker is not a long term option even if he starts out the season that way.
