I think i should have been a bit clearer. I don't really fancy players with lots of pace and no technical ability. However if i had a choice between two players - one with zero pace and lots of skill and the other with lots of pace and zero skill, i'd know which one to go for.

Obviously the ideal situation would be to get both, however i rate skill over pace.

Considering pace to not be important is a mistake nowadays just like choosing it over other qualities, taking your example Alonso's range of passing makes up for his relative lack of pace, but he is best paired with a pacier player to still allow a team to play a high pressure pressing kind of play.

Beyond their other deficiencies, the lack of pace in the manc's cm partnership was one of the reasons for the ease of victory for Barca yesterday because with pace you end up in the situation of having to sit back and invite pressure or you push forward and leave your defence liable to get clobbered by a quick counterattack.
