In a one-off game there is always the chance of out of the ordinary stuff happening.

Simple answer is that it is a marathon not a sprint, they avoid major blips during the season, they grind out enough results against the better sides and feast on the weaker sides when half of those are beaten before they show up and that's before you consider their run of luck with the reffing decisions.

The other factors in their favour are continuity and lack of upheaval, you have chelsea are up there until Roman interferes and chases away another manager.

City are starting to reap the benefits of the wealthy owners but don't have the continuity of being a team rather than a collection of players yet.

Arsenal are held back by Wenger's arrogance of not spending big to supplement younger finds, it is like he read a manual on how Barca works but he didn't read it all.

Spurs are punching above their weight with a good epl manager getting well backed by the owners.

Finally, there is us who have had horrendous turmoil behind the scenes, near financial disaster and then an imbecile as a manager. If we had better owners at the time then we could have built upon the near misses of Athens and the league by now.

If he doesn't bring in two starting centre mids this summer then you would have to think that he is tanking the squad so his eventual replacement cannot match up to him because I think that whole knocking them off their perch thing also applies to past manc greats like Busby too in his mind.

In some ways you might also think that him not mentioning any concerns about the amount of debt that has been loaded onto the club by their owners also goes to the issue of him doing what is right for his record since they give him money for signings right now.
