I've had the good fortune to see Liverpool win the league title at Anfield on
many occasions. So many in fact that they all blur into one another. But one
game stands out - Liverpool vs Aston Villa May 1980 .
Firstly because I watched it from the away end. When you've queued to get in
the Kop as often as me, you learn to judge when you're going to be locked
out. This day was no exception so I bottled out of the scrum for the Kop end,
tucked my red scarf into my pocket and paid to get in with the Villa fans.
The second reason for the day being memorable was becase a young Israeli
player who, despite never going on to be an Anfield legend, wrote his name
into Anfield folklore. It must have been a nerve-wracking experience for
Avi - stepping out into the cauldron that was Anfield for a game that meant
so much. And he could so easily have gone to pieces when he sliced the ball
into his own net. But he kept his nerve. Not only did he play out the game
with a decent performance, he restored Liverpool's lead - a lead that we kept
to guarantee the trophy that we crave so much today
So rest in peace Avi. Gone but definitely not forgotten.
