We work with Steve every few months and he's currently split between his
home(s) in Southport and Florida,
After leaving the academy a few years ago, he was diplomatically offered a
role as "Club Ambassador", and was based in the US for a while. This ended
at the end of the 2008/2009 season I believe. As mentioned though, he still
spends a lot of time out there, mainly in semi-retirement, but he has
interests outside of the game.
He is a tad embarrassed that he still warrants a mention in "Fields of
Anfield Road" - citing Peter Thompson and John Barnes "if you want to
mention a couple of players who could do a bit of real magic..." - but
obviously finds it a real honour to be remembered so many years on.
Interestingly, in one of our discussions, Steve mentioned how the phrase
"The Liverpool Way" was coined as the title to a paper he wrote with Peter
Robinson in the early 1970's outlining, well, TLW of doing things...
something akin to a mission statement that was not actually published but
was implemented throughout the club and stood us in good stead for more than
a few years... We were last with Steve in March or April this year and hope
to catch up with him again before Christmas and he did say he would try and
find me a copy... I'm sure that would make excellent reading.
Like almost all the old boys, very down to earth, humble about his
achievements and appreciative of the fans. Keeps his own counsel in public
as a rule on contentious issues - probably because of his work on TLW ! -
but certainly wasn't afraid to make his views known internally...
